8:35 What is Evelyn Kung's Advice on Masks?

here is a quickie, hopefully this isn’t a silly question. with the us department of education's recent ruling on masks. what is Dr. Kung's advice on this

19:16 Dealing with Mask Related Obstacles

My daughter did the whole year in the hospitals and never got over the mask issue. It caused her both sensory and panic attacks, so just added one more obstacle to her already stressful day. But nobody said they couldn't wear them. It's a CHOICE!

26:58 Teenagers & Tantrums

My son is 14 and has autism. He has an attitude to everything and still throws fists. What should I do? Like he is 2 or 3.

47:03 Refusing Schedule and Regulation

My daughter has many visuals and schedules and aids, but she continues to “refuse” to use them. If they are working for her, she seems to get bothered that it is working and that her “code” has been cracked. So, she will have a behavior that could have been avoided if she had stuck to the schedule, but she seems to be “looking” for reasons to be miserable. And can’t stand to function without the misery. So, being organized and regulated seems to make her dis-regulated, if that makes sense? I just don’t know what to do about it. We have tried ABA, CBT, and DBT. She is 15 and this problem has existed from the start. She did 2 residential settings. She does so well in the “structured” the rules are the rules, and no outside stressors are added that she always “graduates” in 30 days. She can tell you the rules she does awful at the Point of Performance. She unwinds too quick, and her negative self-talk takes over too quick in the real world. It's very hard to watch and work through.

40:08 where can I start now that he is 19?
This is for next time Dr. Doreen is on :) I've been listening to your podcast for a while and I'm almost depressed that it wasn't around when my son was small.  He 19 now and I'm starting to feel regret that I never tried the interventions you talk about back when he was first diagnosed. I think I put all our eggs in one basket with the school therapies.  (ABA OT Speech) My question is where can I start now that he is 19? How would I find someone to help guide us in Worcester, MA... central Massachusetts? Is there a registry of Doctors that can help? Do we start with gf/cf? I know you can't give individual advice but in general, is that where people would try to start? Thanks so much for any input! Also, thank you for all that you do!

Watch/Listen as our host responds to autism questions with the founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh!

9:18 With events of catatonic My teenage x 2 in last 3 years Is this a medical problem or medication related?
 11:22 Negative Self-Talk
Good morning. My 13 year old son uses a lot of negative self talk...I'm terrible at this. I failed! I'm the worst one...etc. We've tried ignoring it because I think he does it for attention, but he still says negative statements about himself all the time. I actually think he likes to say them. What else can we do?
20:37 What is a good medication for anxiety
I am Trying to get away from medications and trying THC w/ CBD, but I don’t want to prevent myself from getting a job either
It’s unfortunate that social media isn’t helping. It’s better to have a face to face conversation
 30:22 Trying New Foods
My daughter is on the spectrum (she’s almost 7) and I can not get her to try new foods without a complete meltdown. She will scream, cry and throw the food. If I do get her to try something new, she’ll automatically gag and spit it out. She only eats crunchy textures (chips, dry cereal, crackers, pretzels) and other sugary junk foods. How can I get her to try new things? I’ve taken her to the doctors (more than once) and that did nothing… the doctor wanted her to try new foods with her there (the same thing I’ve tried) but charged almost $200 to do it each time so I canceled. Any advice would be appreciated.
39:12 The child follows what the mother puts before her… remove chips and any sugars, the child should be introduced to a different diet.
 45:45 Potty Training (Prompting)
Hi. My 8 year old son with Autism will only poop if I tell him to sit on the toilet. If I don't, he will hold it and I will eventually have to give him something to help him go and it's usually a disaster. How to get him to be independent? He goes to regular ed school and does well academically.
48:07 My child is 3. As we move towards the fall, she would move towards intensive ABA or have him go to school?
55:27 Is it worth it to try the Gluten Free Casein Free Diet?
I have a 4 year old diagnosed with autism who has dark circles underneath his eyes, is it worth it to try the GFCF diet? Are we risking anything by trying it?

Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh, the founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders, joins us again for another episode of Ask Dr. Doreen! Dr. Doreen answers viewer questions about school refusal, mouthing, aggression and more, tune in!

1:05 School Refusal

Can you please talk about how to deal with school refusal – kids and teens who refuse to go to school, tantrum to get out of it, hide, etc.

11:28 Mouthing

How can I stop mouthing for a 3 year old who knows not to mouth but sneaks mouthing when you are not looking. Mouths squishy toys and hard plastic objects BCBA recommended "chewlery" allowing child to Bite that then fading it but advised could take a long time to fade Said there is no other sensory outlet for mouthing than providing a chew toy, crunchy foods, and toothbrush. I have been blocking the behavior and verbal “no”

18:05 Aggressive Teenagers

What's the best way to deal with aggression in a teenager? My son’s automatic reaction is to hit out when things don't go his way. He instantly regrets it, it's just an automatic response to anything he feels is unfair. Consequences escalate his behavior. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

20:32 Developmental Delay Vs Autism

Hi Dr. Doreen. I am living in the UAE and a mother of 2 year old identical twins. We first saw signs of autism at 13 months old. Given we don’t have any financial support through insurance - we did a lot of therapy ourselves and later hired a RBT. They are currently doing ABA 5 hours per week each. They have progressed really well. Can mand, tact, answer simple questions. Really good with academics - numbers alphabets - reading 3 letter words. They are still behind in social and play skills. Seeing their great progress and their ability to learn so quickly- I sometimes wonder if they are just developmentally delayed or is this autism? What is the possibility that they are just delayed.

29:08 How can I support family with caring for my son after my surgery in August. I will not be able to care for him for 2 weeks.

34:50 Potty Training Regression

5 year old regression in potty training. Do I have to start all over? He’s fighting hard to not go to the potty and going # 1 in his pants after being fully potty trained. When I say fighting hard I’m talking major protesting tantrums to not go to the potty, and then going in his pants

45:16 could it be it's difficulty to detoxifying because they have lack of good bacteria in the bowel? They should start to do tests on autistic individually because of the wide spectrum  and high level of iron would you suggest a specific diet? I tried t0 do a detoxifying diet but she was not eating at all.

51:36 (Response to the Potty Training Question)

Potty trained for a year, going by himself. Ever since school got out

He’s been doing this ever since school got out for summer

I think he wants both to control over his environment and he doesn’t want to stop what he’s doing

7:31 How can I know if my child is hurting if she can’t speak?

10:46 I have a 3.8 year old granddaughter that wants to scratch and scream at you. She will also hit you, how do we handle it?

26:12 Hi, I would like to thank Dr. Doreen for answering my question on hyperbaric chambers and redox reactions. It was so informative and helpful, I could listen to Dr. Doreen speak all day :) Would Dr. Doreen consider giving a crash course to BCBA's on all the biological aspects of treatment for Autism including diet, medications, exercises.... whatever is out there, I would love to know it to better help my clients. Thank you for an amazing show!

29:07 My 6 year old child on the spectrum doesn’t like when his 13 year old NT son touches his toys or any items. He tantrums and gets upset. He doesn’t like to share with his brother.

My son also gets upset and obsessed with his 13 year old brother’s feet. He gets upset when his brother has his feet uncovered (we’ve tried having my older son cover his feet.. not working

Also… I’m exhausted. I feel like I’m on a hamster wheel… it’s always something

40:39 Can you help me help my child who is 5 on the spectrum poops everywhere he is pee trained but struggling to get him to poop in the toilet.

44:54 Hello, My daughter has memory Issues, she forgets things easily, any suggestions? She usually forgets where she was going or what she was looking for.

50:57 My nephew is 7 years old on a spectrum, lives in Switzerland and has only few hours in a week of therapy. Dr Doreen, do you have your facility there or you know anyone so they can get proper therapy?

52:07 Skills and IBT, Parent useful strategies for your home

IBT educator E-Learning Modula Educator Behavior Management

55:07 We're new to ABA therapy, we were recommended by our child's psychologist with a newly opened ABA provider, but was told that the staff are not new and they are experienced who decided to build their own ABA. There's no review online yet about them but was told that there're no waiting list and there's staff available within the area for a child. Do you think we should trust and go for it? What do we need to consider regarding choosing a good ABA Provider for our child?

5:25 Would hyperbaric chambers be an effective method to assist individuals with autism?

I am a BCBA and frequently watch your show. I was listening to Dr. Doreen speak on June 9th regarding the possible link between toxins, the redox reaction, and autism (at the 59 minute mark). If I understood correctly, the toxins prevent the respiratory cycle from functioning optimally. If that is the case, would hyperbaric chambers be an effective method to assist individuals with autism? Thank you for a great and informative show!

22:04 How Can I Help My Roommate with Autism?
I have a new roommate with autism. Extremely high functioning, however as an adult they need still a care taker in a sense. Cannot drive, really bad with money, super gullible...can't really cook. I've never lived with someone with autism, however my heart broke when they told me their story. I'm Caucasian, and they a person of color. Most of 2020 they were homeless and even caught COVID because of it. Couch surfing, they got sexually abuses by some they were staying with and others just took their social security money and EBT, all while calling them racial slurs to their face. Some people are truly disgusting. I have no interest in taking advantage of this human. They've been through enough and I certainly don't want to add to the list. The issue here is not only am I dealing with autism, I'm also dealing with PTSD from what they experienced in 2020. I'd like to help promote independence so one day they can live on their own, however also don't want to come off as cold, and I also don't want to coddle too much either. I'll happily take any advice I can get.

Evelyn Kung, the Clinical Systems Manager for the Center for Autism and Related Disorders, joins us once again to discuss viewer questions. Check it out!

11:34 Reducing and Refraining Spitting: 3 year old non verbal son loves when you sing for him. He loves YouTube kids Cocomelon. He not given much screen time. When he does he spits on the iPad screen a lot. When you take it away from him and turn the show on TV he does the same thing. He does not always want chewy stixx or chewy necklace. He receives regular ABA, OT and speech services. Wondering if there other intervention procedures we could try to help him reduce or refrain from spitting?

17:48 Undesirable Tasks: Hello ladies.. how do I work on building the skill 'Sometimes I have to do things I don't want to do.' My 13 year old has it in his brain that except from school he doesn't need to do anything he doesn't like. For example, make his lunch, go outside and get fresh air, spend time with his family... We have let him have his way a few times and now he thinks that's how it always should be. He is very content sitting on the couch with his iPad. He is home schooled and doesn't have friends. He says no to almost every suggestion and we end up forcing him out of the house sometimes and he will say he had fun. We live in a beautiful state with lots to do!

29:51 Hand-Flapping: Hi. My son hand flaps only when he’s overly excited. What do I do for that?

32:39 Meltdowns: I have custody of my 11, almost 12, year old grandson. I'm having trouble helping him calm down when he's approaching meltdown. I see it coming and I start using my soft directive tone reminding him to breath and giving simple directions but he absolutely fights me and tells me he can't calm down. I sometimes walk away and give him space and time, or offer hugs but nothing is working. I try to catch it early but I'm failing. Any suggestions?

38:40 Meltdowns with Nonverbal Children: (In response to the answer to the previous question) What if child is nonverbal???

48:37 FREE IBT Courses Available Online: Parents: E-learning Parent Communication and Socialization + RBT 2.0 Training course free to parents on a case by case basis Educators: The Social Environment

51:55 Finger Sucking: How do it get my child to not suck his fingers ??. He is 8 years old and this is a health concern. He sucks fingers for comfort . He does not like chewy . He is nonverbal.

57:10 Schedule Fixation: My son get fixated on schedules. Even if he is doing what he likes outside home. If he has to be home at a certain time he wants to go home. How do I make him change his mind?

The Founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders answers viewer questions about cognition, ADOS, insurance and much more!  Check it out!

14:22 What skills programs concentrate on cognition without being considered academic

21:36 here is a question, with all the scary events that are going on right now, how can people on the spectrum handle them and not get scared?

31:01 My child is diagnosed with ASD but the insurance denied abs after provided ADOS.

34:46 We are getting Neurological development evaluation what does something like this entail?

35:50 Hi! Have you had any experience with kiddos taking Namenda? His bio med doctor wants to put my son in Namenda to help with symptoms, especially hyperactivity. My son laughs excessively... it’s an escape behavior. He also laughs excessively when he’s nervous. I know it’s not yeast, we’ve tested him for yeast. It’s exhausting.

38:52 How do I make sure a school district removes a special needs teacher and aides and replaces them with someone who is educated and doesn't abuse our kids? Also, how do I present the NEED for cameras in our districts special needs classrooms?? ...I have 100 hours of audio...HORRIFIED by the first 5 minutes😵😖

39:50 Where do we find out about that therapy Shannon I use cbd oil it helps me alot I don't do rx meds. My insurance denied aba or anything for autism I was told speech therapy would be then they didn't pay it

44:13 They cannot help me with my child licking his hand.

46:14 Please state your credentials and provide links to the scholarly studies you speak of

49:53 Hello from St. Paul mn , my question is how safe it’s to take COVID vaccination when my son has challenges already, he’s severe autistic please I’m worried Need help,

Shannon and Dr. Doreen answer questions written in by viewers about autism recovery, quality ABA, diets and much more! Tune in and check it out!

6:42 Are Shannon or Dr. Doreen autistic or have autistic friends and family?
9:25 Do you believe a person with ASD can recover?
14:25 I believe that ABA therapy is extremely cruel.
19:17 I wish my very high functioning aspie 6 years old received ABA and learn all the skills now than later 🙈
20:39 hi Dr. Doreen here is a quickie, is there any other diets that you reccommend besides gf/cf?
26:02 My son is potty trained in pee, but I cannot get him to do #2 on the potty. Please help
28:54 Hello, my son communicates his need/want he is 41/2now. When will he start to communicate with us (randomly)
31:30 My grandson doesn’t eat and it’s very hard to put him to sleep
37:39 My son is 6. He’s been in ABA for 3 years and has made great progress but he’s so hyperactive. He does great in his center but so hyperactive at home and is now becoming defiant. I’m losing my mind.
42:19 My 8 y.o. is always hungry. She can eat 3 bowls of spaghetti. She also has issuea with heat. She cant stand being outaide when too hot. What ia this and what can i do?
44:26 What help is there for me? I just can’t deal with my own thoughts.
46:14 I need advice on how to handle my parents because they don’t trust me.
54:32 Our son is 4, and was diagnosed with ASD a year ago. We are currently living in a region with very poor education, and both my husband and I remember how autistic kids were treated when we were in school, not that long ago and not that far away. We are afraid he won't be able to reach his highest potential if we stay, or worse, for his education to make this brilliant kid believe he isn't good enough for anything. We have been talking about moving, but my parents are retired and take care of him while we work. They are fantastic, and he has a great relationship with them. We are afraid of him losing this connection and withdrawing. They cannot afford to move with us. I know everyone has a different case, and we must decide for ourselves, but has anyone here been faced with a similar choice? What did you decide, and how did it turn out? Thank you very much! Edit: We are thinking about moving overseas.
1:00:18 My 4 year old ASD son probably has visual slimming...looks at moving trees, light coming out of windows... his language skills are improving... please help on how to work on this
