Today’s Jargon is Fine Motor Skills.  Fine motor skills involve the small muscles in the body, that help us make small precise movements.  Fine motor skills allow us are often involved in hands, finger and toes.  They help us to eat and to button our clothes, open a bottle, write with a pen as well as a host of other actions.

The Summer Swab Sensation is for military families whose child has been diagnosed with developmental delay or autism spectrum disorders. It features an educational presentation on the role and benefits of genetic testing and an opportunity for testing with the CMA test (a simple cheek swab) and meeting with genetic counselors from Lineagen. CARD, Autism Research Group and ACT Today! will be on hand to familiarize families with their services as well as offer fun activities for children. The event will be held at the San Diego Marriott Hotel Del Mar from 9 to 4 PM on Saturday, August 1, 2015.

Brightfield Shadi is a Special Olympic Silver Medalist from the 2011 games and he is now an International Global Messenger for the Special Olympics.  Brightfield speaks about his gratitude to the Special Olympics for helping him to get medical help, for building his self-esteem and for giving him opportunities he never dreamt of!

Dr. Timothy Shriver, Chairman of the Special Olympics International Board of Directors, answers an Autism Mom's question about the wording he used in his speech at the opening ceremony for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games.  Dr. Shriver described the athletes as being "intellectually different-abled", instead of the common term "intellectually disabled".  Was the change in words deliberate?
